Colleges can boost retention—particularly for students from historically underserved groups—by addressing students’ fears about whether they belong in college or have what it takes to succeed. Left unaddressed, these fears can become self-fulfilling prophecies that feed a destructive cycle of reduced motivation and performance. However, multiple randomized controlled studies (read the report) with thousands of students show that administrators can act to avert this destructive cycle and clear a path for their students to become fearless, resilient learners.
